The Lifeline Exercise: Taking Your Team from Strangers to a Championship Team

In most company environments, we often find ourselves working alongside colleagues we barely know. We see their professional personas daily, but how much do we really understand about their journey, their challenges, and what drives them? Knowing somebody on a deeper level builds massive trust. The main component of a great work environment is trust between team members.

How the Lifeline Exercise works for teams

Enter the Lifeline Exercise – a powerful tool that can transform your team from a group of co-workers into a cohesive, high-performing unit.

This exercise is for leadership teams that want to go deep! If you are not entirely comfortable with going vulnerable and deep, or if you do not have enough time, check out the 3-2-1 Exercise.

How Does It Work?

  • Fill in your Lifeline: Give people this sheet, or in case you are using upcoach, you can use their lifeline app

  • Setting the Stage: Gather your team in a comfortable, private space, encouraging open communication. I personally found that it works best during retreats and offisites.

  • Sharing Time: Each person gets approximately 20 minutes to share their lifeline. This involves describing highs and lows from birth to the present day.

  • Active Listening: As each person shares, other team members listen attentively, without interruption. This focused attention helps create an atmosphere of respect and empathy.

  • Reflection and Connection: After each share, the group briefly discusses shared experiences. This helps team members find common ground and deepen their understanding of each other.

  • Vulnerability Leads the Way: It’s beneficial to have someone start who’s willing to be open and vulnerable. This sets the tone for others to follow suit.

  • Intimate Groups: The exercise works best in smaller groups of 8 or fewer people. This ensures everyone has adequate time to share and fosters a more intimate atmosphere.

Why It Works

The Lifeline Exercise is like a trust fall for your entire life story. By sharing our experiences, both good and bad, we:

  • Take Off Our Masks: We stop being “Sarah from Accounting” and become “Sarah who overcame dyslexia and ran a marathon.”

  • Find Common Ground: You might discover that you and your team lead both struggled with the same insecurities in high school.

  • Build Empathy: Understanding someone’s journey helps us appreciate their perspective. It’s like knowing the rulebook of a sport – you understand why players make certain moves.

  • Create a Safe Space: We permit others to do the same by being vulnerable. It’s like a domino effect of openness.

Tips for Success

  • Lead by Example: If you’re facilitating, consider sharing your lifeline first and going super deep. It’s like being the first person on the dance floor—you set the tone for others to follow.

  • Respect Boundaries: Remember, this isn’t a confessional. People should share only what they’re comfortable with.

  • Listen Actively: When others are sharing, give them your full attention and keep mental notes for the shared experience part of the meeting.

The Payoff

After a successful Lifeline Exercise, you’ll notice a shift in your team dynamics. It’s like watching a sports team that suddenly clicks mid-season – communication improves, trust deepens, and performance soars. You’re no longer just coworkers; you’re a community with a shared understanding and appreciation for each other’s journeys.

Remember, building a high-performing team isn’t just about skills and strategies. It’s about creating connections that go beyond the surface. The Lifeline Exercise is your secret play to transform your team from a group of individuals into a cohesive unit ready to win together.

So, are you ready to take your team on this journey? It might just be the game-changer you’ve been looking for.
